Pune, Feb 04: AI is transforming industries and students must embrace technological advancements to remain agile, said AICTE chairman Prof T G Sitharam, He was addressing the Convocation 2024 which was held by DY Patil International University here on Sunday.

The University will shortly start Centre for Generative AI.

“We are starting a Centre for Generative AI with a focus on Computer Science & Engineering, Financial Technology, Core Engineering, Bioengineering, Design & Applied Arts, Media & Journalism and a healthcare AI hub,” said Vice Chancellor Prof Prabhat Ranjan who was featured in ‘Outlook’ for the second time as a visionary contributor to India's $5 trillion economy goal.

The University celebrated its Convocation 2024, in which the graduating students were conferred degrees by the university’s Chancellor, Dr Sanjay Patil, whereas welcome speech was delivered by the Trustee of DY Patil Educational Complex, Tejas Patil.

The VC, Prof Ranjan also announced the university's expansion plans, including the merger of D Y Patil Institute of Engineering, Management, and Research (DYPIEMR) and the introduction of new programs. In 2024, DYPIU launched BTech programs in mechanical, chemical, civil and semiconductor engineering. In this year, 2025, the university will expand into liberal arts, introducing BSc Economics and BA Linguistics, with AI integration across courses, gradually adding programs in International Relations, Psychology, and Law.

To support its academic expansion, DYPIU is enhancing its infrastructure. In addition to ongoing construction to add 1.2 lakh square feet of space, it plans to add 1.8 lakh square feet by 2027 to provide a total of 7.2 lakh square feet. A 33-floor hostel complex, possibly the tallest hostel complex in India with International quality accommodation, is also under construction and would be ready for use by students in July 2025.

Prior to it, DYPIU inaugurated Takshashala, a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary smart manufacturing facility, at the hands of Dr. T G Sitharam, Chairman of AICTE. Aligned with NEP 2020 and Industry 5.0, Takshashala integrates diverse technologies like subtractive, additive, and formative manufacturing. The facility boasts advanced equipment, including CNC machines, robots, 3D printers, and a metrology lab, providing students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge manufacturing processes. This is among many efforts by DYPIU to promote India as manufacturing hub of the world.
